The Birth of America's Flag and the United States Army
June 14 is a very special date in American history for two reasons in particular. The first happened on this day in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish the United States Army. The second important event came in 1777 when Congress passed another resolution that called for the creation of an official United States flag. Today we commemorate this as Flag Day throughout the nation. Two of the most important symbols of our freedom are our army and our flag. The two have been interconnected since the founding days of our nation. It's important that we understand the origins of who we are and how we got to be where we are today. The key to all of it is George Washington.
